Keep in Reserve: Chiara Sbolci and Maryam Yousif

A reserve is hidden storage that you dip into when needed or desired. It’s a pool that casts a reflection, a well that holds water, a memory that captures time. It’s data protection and your youtube ‘recommended’ section. An impresion, ripple, or algorithm based on past behavior and prediction.

Keep in Reserve pairs two artists who conceal and conserve. Maryam Yousif’s site-specific installation literally covers letterpress tools with painted cloth and ceramics. Her light-hearted, bright structures and figures reimagine the utility of these old industrial machines. The objects in the room that formerly had function now become ghosts. Chiara Sbolci’s wall pieces are quiet and subtle. By melding together symbols and materials and then muting them, a coded narrative emerges. This energy and inherent humor seems to demand the human gaze, as the mirrors embedded in her pieces look back.
